The Importance in Pursuing Higher Education

Higher education is a very worthy goal to pursue if the opportunity and desire are there. Higher education allows people to create more opportunities for themselves by increasing their marketability as employees. The more education people have in a given field or industry, the likelier it is that their knowledge will be in high demand. This makes them more marketable, and it captures the attention of potential employers. Education can also increase skills, knowledge, and experience. The more education people have in a field, the chances are that their experience will also match and help them to excel. The knowledge they have in their area of concentration is a bonus, as well, since employers often lean toward candidates who have education and exposure to certain topic areas.

The Role of Test-Taking in Educational Settings

In order to pursue higher education, students must be disciplined and focused. They should be poised to assume the challenges that come with pursuing more knowledge. Test-taking and the necessary skills to take tests are a definite plus. Most graduate schools require potential students to take a standardized test before applying for admission. Many students ready themselves for the GMAT prep test one to two years before they actually take the test. They do this to give themselves ample time to read, review, and prepare for such a defining turn in their educational goals.

In the end, these students don't regret the countless hours they've spent studying and preparing. They realize the benefits they will receive in return for their dedication and hard work put into their educational attainments. Not only are there possibilities of better jobs and opportunities, but their pursuit of higher education promises a better future.

From mountains to beach, every campus has its beauty

Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia are two universities on opposite ends of Vancouver's Lower Mainland in BC, Canada. Both campuses are spectacular in their own right, and for very different reasons.

Simon Fraser University sits on the top of a mountain at the edge of the farming valley. From most points of the university you can have at least a 180 degree view, often much more, and what a view it is. From high on Burnaby Mountain you can see the snow clad North Shore Mountains, and even the sparkling lights on the snow runs in early evening, while on the other side of campus you can see the Fraser Valley farmland stretching all the way to the U.S. border. If you have evening classes you can overlook the Lower mainland with the main city of Vancouver in the centre with all the flickering lights and inherent activity that every major metropolis has on display.

The University of British Columbia campus is very different. Situated at the edge of English Bay, the campus is flat. Once again, the North Shore Mountains are very much on display, but why many people favor this university is because it is walking distance to miles of beach - including the famed nudist beach, Wreck beach.

If you will be spending a lot of time on campus, make sure you find a campus that offers you the things that you enjoy.

The campus environment a key element in choice

When it comes to deciding what makes a great university campus, it's like trying to decide what makes something beautiful - it's all in the eyes of the beholder. The best university campus is such a personal thing that if there was a choice out of 10 campuses, there would most likely be as many votes for each campus as there were people voting.

If you are an athlete, the best campus would be one that provided a great athletics program, top rate facilities and equipment, and, a great team of coaches. An arts student on the other hand would probably vote the best campus as one that has some renowned artists on the faculty, links to major galleries and art mentoring programs, and also an on-campus exhibition gallery that was well regarded.

For other students, it may be the student residence that is the priority, or the evening and weekend options for on-campus activities. Some urban campuses are open almost 24/7 while some city centre campuses close after the last evening class and are not open on Saturday evening or Sundays.

The campus atmosphere goes a long way in making your university experience a rewarding one. It is important to visit a university and get a feel for it before making your choice.

Campus Safety

Campus safety

There are so many horrendous acts of violence on many U.S. university campuses that one must take care to be safe. Before you go to your university for the first time, find out if they have an emergency plan and what your role would be.

When you first attend the campus, find the office for the campus police, or emergency planning, and talk to the staff about health and safety issues. Find out if there has been a lot of crime on campus, and, if so, what type of crime. Are the crime stats going up or down?

Find out what safety procedures are in place for women students working at night. Some campus police offer escort service to your car or bus stop. Look into the history of the campus and establish if any serious crimes of violence have been committed in the recent past.

If your campus is in a natural hazard area, establish what plans are in place to respond to a disaster. What is your responsibility? Make sure you are comfortable with all the answers you get before deciding on your place of study. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety.

Considerations

Considerations

When choosing which university to attend there are many factors to take into consideration. Of course, location is important. Perhaps you cannot leave the place you live and so the university needs to be in or near your home town. Perhaps you love water sports and so you will look for a place near the ocean or large lake.

For others the location may not be important; it will be the program choice that is key. If this is the case you will need to do some research to find out if the program is highly regarded in the business community. If it is not, it will not help your chances of getting a job when you graduate. Likewise, if you want to go on to a higher degree, your application will not be considered favorable if you did not attend a well known and highly regarded academic program.

While tuition costs are obviously important, most students expect to work as they study. If you are going to a university in a major city, you have some good opportunities to find work to help finance your education. Scholarships and financial aid is also available.

Do not pick any university. Do some investigation and make sure you pick a university that you will be happy attending.
