Campus Safety

Campus safety
There are so many horrendous acts of violence on many U.S. university campuses that one must take care to be safe. Before you go to your university for the first time, find out if they have an emergency plan and what your role would be.
When you first attend the campus, find the office for the campus police, or emergency planning, and talk to the staff about health and safety issues. Find out if there has been a lot of crime on campus, and, if so, what type of crime. Are the crime stats going up or down?
Find out what safety procedures are in place for women students working at night. Some campus police offer escort service to your car or bus stop. Look into the history of the campus and establish if any serious crimes of violence have been committed in the recent past.
If your campus is in a natural hazard area, establish what plans are in place to respond to a disaster. What is your responsibility? Make sure you are comfortable with all the answers you get before deciding on your place of study. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own safety.
