Tips to Reconnoitering A New Campus

Whether you're fresh off the boat from high school, transferring to a new university, or headed back for round two of your higher education, getting around and getting to know a new campus can be tough, which is why some people choose online education, instead. Here's a few helpful hints and strategies to learning the terrain at your new educational institution:

1) Ask Questions. Hey, you're there to learn right? Nobody's going to mind if you ask where the Engineering Building is, or how much the cafeteria charges for lunch. If you don't know something, don't be afraid to ask. Teachers, staff, and students will all be willing to help you out. Remember to ask questions about professors, too, and of course about subject matter that you need help with. Learn not only the lay of the land, but the educational and cultural terrain.

2) Map Out Your Life. Figure out the route that your day or week will take you through. The path from home to class, to class, to the library, to study group, to home, to the game. It's a little difficult the first couple of times, but once you've got that down and know how long it takes to get to class you can do all sorts of stuff, like sleep in later.

3) Make Friends. For lots of reasons, its important to know people. For one, we are social creatures and friends are something we all need. Secondly, you're there to learn and you can learn lots from the people around you. Make friends with your professors, not to schmooze up to them, but to get the most out of your time at school. Networking can also be a big deal. Meeting people at school can give you opportunities in all sorts of fields.
